A Musical Evening with Emil Chau
Venue: Chan Centre, the University of British Colombia, Vancouver
Date: 21st July, 1998

Emil and his band arrived in vancouver on July 18th, and held a mini press conference a few hours later at Aberdeen Centre. Seeing him in person (flesh and blood) for the first time ever, was quite an exciting experience for me (just ask Steph, Canna or Pauline...I still can't wipe that big silly grin off my face. I must say, he looks better in person than he does on a tv screen. : (especially his nice shiny legs and big white teeth!!) As soon as he arrived at the Vancouver Airport, he was all smiles. Even after a long long flight, he was still very friendly and cheerful towards everybody. He chatted with the concert and charity organizers and did not decline anyone a photo opportunity with him. (what a great guy!)

Later on at the press conference, the charity organizers spoke a bit about the "Walk with the Dragon" charity event, and of Emil's concert at the "Chan Centre Theatre" located at the University of British Columbia. They then had a short ceremony for the charity and concert sponsors....finally, Emil arrived! There was very limited floor seating, but we were lucky enough to grab a few seats. Others had to stand around the railings, on the sides, and on the stairs to have a good look at him. He didn't sing any songs at the press conference, but he played 'charades' with the audience...and Pauline was fortunate enough to win an autographed poster by guessing the name of one of his songs. ::sigh:: some people get all the luck : p

There were still some tickets available to his concert before the press conference...but towards the end of the press conference, it was announced that all tickets were sold out.

At the "Walk with the Dragon" the next day, Emil boarded on a hovercraft to meet some of the people who "Walked for Charity". Although we didn't take part in the long walk, Pauline did her part by swallowing a mouth full of sand... hehehe. after the walk was over, a large crowd gathered by the stage to hear Emil perform. During one of the songs, a lady lifted her son up on stage to hand him flowers...Emil looked at the boy and said jokingly "what? you're giving me your son? I'll give you a frisbee, but your son is coming back to Taiwan with me." The audience loved him. His performance was awesome.

Emil spent the next day preparing for his concert, and one of the people at "Tom Lee" gave him a guitar.

On the evening of the 21st, Emil held his charity concert at UBC. Emil made a special entrance at the concert. while everyone's eyes were fixed to the front of the stage, Emil suddenly appeared at the back exit door, surprising everyone. in addition to lots of singing, there were lots of jokes and laughs shared with Emil and the audience. One audience member shouted out "Emil Chau...you're so handsome" in cantonese and the whole audience, including Emil broke out in laughter.

The highlight of the evening was when he forgot the lyrics to "Full Moon". Although many audience members wanted to hear him sing that particular song, no one really minded, since the atmosphere of the whole concert was light, cheery, and extremely humorous.

Sadly, but surely, Emil flew back to Taiwan the next day. it was definitely a memorable week. I was able to get together with Stephanie again, and finally meet Pauline, Canna, Vincent, and Jason. I'm sure a great time was had by all and I can't wait until his next concert in Vancouver. Although this was the first concert of his that I've been to, it is certainly not the last...

cheers from vancouver,
littlecow (with a permanent silly grin on my face - thanks to Emil)
