Where Jackie unwinds
JACKIE CHAN always goes to The 50s entertainment complex to unwind whenever he is in town.
It comes as no surprise then that the Hong Kong superstar owns the Tanjong Pagar building that houses the four-level complex.
It boasts a lounge on the ground floor, two levels of karaoke rooms and a private function room on the top floor.
Seated on a couch in the function room, Chan told Life! on Thursday that he prefers coming here than going to pubs.
' If I feel comfortable somewhere, I will always go to the same place,' said the 50-year-old who bought the building in 1996 for $8.8 million.
As for the complex itself, it has undergone two renovations costing a total of $300,000 since it opened for business in 1994.
Despite having modern amenities like KTV and lounge facilities, the place retains its nostalgic 1950s feel.
'The ground level was formerly a coffeeshop,' said managing director Simon Kwan, 47.
'When we first opened, the place was catering mainly to the older generation of big spenders,' he said.
'But now we welcome anyone to come and have a good time.'
The 50s offers all-night free rental of any one of its eight plushly decorated KTV rooms for drinks orders totalling $99 per room.
Next week marks the business' 10th anniversary.
As part of its celebrations, the organisers are inviting Taiwanese crooner Emil Chau, Hong Kong singer Maria Cordero and Singapore actor Li Nanxing for a one-night-only performance at the premises.
Chau and Cordero will also be cooking for 60 destitute old people living around the area. -- Sujin Thomas
